Every four years, in the picturesque village of Casamale in Somma Vesuviana, an ancient and captivating magic comes to life: the Festa delle Lucerne, a popular event that transforms the historic center into a unique spectacle of lights, art, and tradition.

A centuries-old tradition

The origins of the Festa delle Lucerne date back to ancient times, likely connected to pagan rituals linked to fire and fertility, later absorbed and reinterpreted through a Christian lens. Today, the festival represents a deeply felt moment of identity for the local community, which prepares for months in advance to welcome visitors from all over Campania and beyond.

The village becomes a stage

For three evenings, the streets of the Casamale neighborhood—one of the best-preserved medieval centers in the Vesuvius area—are completely darkened. Electric lights are turned off, making way for thousands of terracotta lanterns that illuminate arches, balconies, windows, and courtyards. The lanterns, small oil lamps, are arranged in geometric and symbolic patterns, creating an intimate and surreal atmosphere, between shadows and warm glows.

Making the experience even more enchanting are art installations, traditional sounds, costumed performers, open workshops, tastings, and performances that turn the event into a multisensory journey.

A deep connection with the land

Cantine Olivella was born on the slopes of Mount Somma, and participating in the Festa delle Lucerne also means rediscovering the authentic soul of these places: the sense of community, the strength of roots, and the art of creating together.

During the festival evenings, the village courtyards open to host tastings of local products and wines, along with stories of life around Vesuvius. It is a perfect moment for those who love to travel slowly, seeking experiences that truly reflect the spirit of the land.

When it takes place

The Festa delle Lucerne takes place every four years in August. The last edition was in 2023, so the next one is expected in 2027. A date to mark in your calendar, to experience firsthand the wonder of a collective ritual that endures through time and renews its enchantment each time.
